Why zinc is worth getting right

Head-to-head human data are genuinely limited, so it's worth being clear about what we do and don't know.

The most-cited comparison is a 1987 double-blind crossover trial by Barrie and colleagues in 15 healthy adults, who took 50 mg elemental zinc daily as picolinate, citrate, gluconate or placebo for four weeks each. Hair, urine and red-blood-cell zinc rose significantly only on zinc picolinate; the other forms didn't move those markers much in that study. That's the main piece of evidence behind picolinate's reputation. The caveats: it was a small, decades-old trial using indirect markers, and it hasn't been clearly replicated.

More recent and more direct evidence comes from Wegmüller and colleagues (2014), who used stable isotopes — a precise way to measure true absorption — in 15 adults taking 10 mg zinc. Absorption was about 61% from zinc citrate and 61% from zinc gluconate, statistically the same as each other, and both were higher than zinc oxide (about 50%). The "so what?": citrate and gluconate are both efficiently absorbed, so neither is a poor choice. In-vitro work also suggests organic forms like citrate and gluconate are more readily released than less-soluble forms such as oxide.

Put together: the strongest direct data show citrate and gluconate are well absorbed and similar; picolinate has one favourable older study but thinner modern evidence. Any of the three is a sensible pick.

Does the form really matter for everyday use?

For most people topping up a balanced diet, the practical difference between picolinate, citrate, gluconate and sulfate is modest.
